Salmon Coast Field Station (SCFS), through the Canada Summer Jobs Program, is seeking an energetic and adaptable person to contribute to operations and outreach at our busy remote research station.The Field Station Assistant will reside at Salmon Coast Field Station for the duration of their employment and pay a contribution of $20 per day towards accommodation, dinners, utilities, internet, and laundry. Breakfast and lunch foods plus personal items are to be covered by the Assistant but can be ordered weekly with Station supplies. SCFS will collect the Assistant in Port McNeill on commencement of employment and return him/her to Port McNeill on completion of employment.


In this role you’ll gain experience of many diverse tasks that are part of running a community-based, non-profit, ecological research station. Every day is different and you’ll never be bored! From leading Station tours and developing outreach materials, to helping with Station maintenance and chopping firewood, you must be resourceful and willing to assist in many ways.

While working and also during off time, this position offers an opportunity to immerse yourself in the beauty and diversity of the Broughton Archipelago. You’ll live in community with researchers, students, volunteers, and staff committed to understanding and protecting this amazing location. The successful applicant will support the Station Coordinators and Project Leaders across all aspects of operating the field station, with a focus on sharing the story of our work with many boaters, kayakers, and other visitors who travel through the Broughton each summer. Your job will include highlighting to visitors why the ecosystem is valuable and in need of protection, and helping them understand how they can support SCFS to continue our work.

Responsibilities include

Assisting with developing outreach materials and interpretative programs.
Participating in outreach activities and delivering interpretative programs.
Coordinating and assisting with Station tours for boaters, kayakers, and other visitors.
Assisting with disseminating information about the local ecosystem and research hosted by SCFS.
Supporting research and data collation activities at the Station.
Assisting with all aspects of Station maintenance, repairs, and operations.

Terms: $15 (gross) per hour. The Field Station Assistant will reside at Salmon Coast Field Station for the duration of their employment and pay a contribution of $20 per day towards accommodation, dinners, utilities, internet, and laundry. Qualifications & Experience: 
All applicants MUST meet the following criteria for the Canada Summer Jobs program:

Aged from 15 to 30 years on commencement of employment;
Registered as a full-time student during the preceding academic year (2015-2016);
Registered in a secondary, post-secondary, CEGEP (Quebec only), vocational, or technical program;
Intending to return to school on a full-time basis during the next academic year (2016-2017);
A Canadian Citizen, permanent resident, or person conferred refugee protection under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act; and
Legally entitled to work in Canada and according to relevant Provincial legislation and regulations.
Please note that foreign students are not eligible.
Skills, experience, and qualifications

Demonstrated interest in environmental conservation, biological research, or marine or coastal ecology, including an understanding of general ecosystem management issues.
Strong interest in environmental outreach and disseminating conservation information.
Good public speaking skills and experience preparing and delivering presentations.
Experience developing and designing educational materials.
Diplomacy, tact, and good communication and organisational skills.
Ability to work effectively within a diverse team as well as independently.
Flexible, resourceful, energetic, and conscientious with good attention to detail.
Self-motivated and enthusiastic about living in a remote location with minimal facilities.
Maintenance skills (carpentry, mechanics, electrical, plumbing, gardening) would be an asset.
Boating certifications and experience would be an asset.
Unfortunately our field station is not equipped to accommodate applicants reliant on a wheelchair for mobility. Applicants must be comfortable moving to and from boats, on uneven terrain, and using stairs.
