Under the supervision of the Executive Director, the Men’s Wellness Coordinator will support aboriginal men across the lifespan in the Port Hardy area. This job requires strong interpersonal communication skills and sensitivity to and knowledge of the local aboriginal culture, as well as knowledge of the local services available to aboriginal men in the North Island.
This position is 20 hours/week and the start date is September 2, 2014. The salary will be based on education and experience.
Duties:
*Maintain a caseload of a maximum of 10 clients/families
*Provide culturally relevant workshops and support groups for men’s groups
*Provide access to appropriate health practitioners and promote healthy male development
*Provide transportation as needed according to policy
*Coordinate Spiritual Grounding workshops, cultural development, and healthy lifestyles workshops
*Provide education/understanding of cultural practices around family development (fatherhood, male roles in the community according to traditional practices)
*Work in one on one and/or group settings
*Act as a liaison between families and other agencies when necessary
*Work as part of the team for larger community events
*Develop reports and maintain statistics
*Attend training as required- some travel may be expected
*Adhere to policies and procedures
Qualifications & Experience:
*Minimum diploma and 3 years experience in a related field
*Class 5 drivers’ licence, Class 4 an asset
*Have own transportation
*Familiarity with Microsoft Office: Word, Excel and Publisher
*Strong ability to develop Service Plans (with client participation) and work plans
*Abundance of experience working with aboriginals and aboriginal communities
*Ability to work alone and as part of a team
*Ability to maintain confidentiality
*Good understanding of the Friendship Centre Movement
*Must be willing to complete a criminal records check through the Ministry of Justice
