Details:
The position is 8 days a month, with a possibility of more work in the future. This is a permanent position. Support worker will provide care in home and in the community for a 13 year old boy with Autism. The worker will help client in achieving their full potential while respecting the clients right to make choices in their lives. This position is a 24 hour shift , that will involve some weekend work.
Specific duties: Provide training with daily living skills, such as food prep., hygiene, social skills and language /engagement skills.
Work will also be required to do housekeeping, and light yardwork.
Worker will be required to be physically active daily, eg. hikes, swimming etc.
Worker will be required to administer medications according to polices of the home, as well as adhere to all other protocols in home, eg. medical, diet, emergency, crisis, etc.
Qualifications & Experience:
Community Support Worker certificate or, Human Service Support Worker or E.C.E. certificate with focus on special needs, or training in Special Education assistance, or equivalent experience needed. First aid certificate is required, applicant must have a safe driving record and be able to successfully complete a criminal safety check.
Courses and some experience, and a Understanding of Autism needed.
Able to follow the philosophy of the care home, maintain confidentiality, and have good written and verbal skills.
Must have a good work ethic, be a good team player, have a willingness to learn and grow.
Must be conscious of good nutrition, and will be expected to eat nutritiously to foster this with the client.
Must be in fairly good shape physically and be prepared to exercise with client daily, hikes, swimming, etc. The client is very energetic and enjoys being active, and daily physical exercise helps him manage his behavior.
Worker needs to be patient , kind, adaptable, respectful, gentle, honest and playful.
It would be an asset if worker has some understanding of picture communication systems and it will be important to have a willingness to grow in this area. A strong desire to learn and grow in understanding the autistic mind and techniques for interaction is essential, you will work closely with a Speech and language therapist and myself, to gain skills in this area.
Some understanding of sensory issues also an asset. Client can be aggressive, so it is important to consider this before applying.
