SUMMARY
Reporting to the Executive Director, the Sexual Abuse Intervention Counsellor (26.25 hrs/wk) provides assessment, treatment, case management and advocacy services to children who have been sexually abused and their families or caregivers. The Counsellor will help
KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Interviews clients and families, prepares case histories, assesses client’s needs and outlines services provided by the organization. Refers clients to other appropriate programs, as required.
2. Develops and implements treatment plans necessary to meet client’s needs. Provides individual and group counselling interventions using a variety of therapeutic techniques on topics around sexual abuse intervention, intrusive sexual behaviours, children who witness abuse, and child/youth mental health, in general
3. Participates in integrated case management meeting on a regular basis to discuss case planning issues, report client progress and evaluate effectiveness of the counselling intervention.
4. Monitors and evaluates client’s progress and as appropriate, may provide follow up support to clients after the end of treatment.
5. Provides required reports on client’s behaviours and progress. Maintains related records and statistics.
6. Maintains knowledge of community resources and provides appropriate referrals to clients to meet their goals.
7. Actively promotes the program to other service providers and the community at large; solicits appropriate community members to participate in service.
8. Attends team meetings, agency meetings and inter-agency meeting in the community, as required. Liaises with other community service providers and professionals.
9. Provides crisis intervention as needed.
10. Performs other related duties as required
ABILITIES/SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE
Sound knowledge of normal stages and related aspects of parenting and family life and the effects of childhood trauma, abuse (specifically, sexual abuse) and neglect on general development.
Demonstrated knowledge of relevant counselling and assessment techniques
Knowledge of group process and facilitation techniques
Well developed written and communication skills, using good interpersonal skills
Good organization and time management skills
Demonstrated experience working in a team
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
This position is required to work in a stressful environment, dealing with clients who are victims of sexual abuse. Work may be conducted outside normal office hours, depending upon client’s availability. Some counselling situations may take place outside the NICCCS office, i.e. First Nations Health Centres, schools.
A valid B.C. driver’s licence and road-worthy vehicle are required to carry out the duties of this position. The vehicle must be equipped with winter tires between October 1st and March 31st of each year.
Qualifications & Experience:
QUALIFICATIONS PREFERRED
Master’s Degree in Counselling or equivalent in a field related to counselling and/or treatment of children
2 years recent related experience
